Breast Reconstruction Day

Mark Kohout - Wednesday, November 13, 2013

Major advances have been made in breast reconstruction surgery but physicians don't always inform women of all their options, according to BeautyInTheBag.com.

New techniques now make it possible for women to avoid large scars, lengthy recovery times and staged operations.

Women considering surgery need to decide when to have the surgery and what type of surgery to have. Options available include fat grafting, implants or tissue expansion. New mastectomy techniques allow women to avoid losing their nipples in the procedure.

Due to the diversity of options and the failure of some physicians to notify women of all their choices, Breast Cancer Awareness Day was held on October 13th to increase awareness amongst patients.

In addition, the day aimed to bring together plastic surgeons, oncologists and other medical professionals to improve coordination.

Plastic surgeons consider a range of factors such as a patient's age, surgical history and body type when determining the best reconstruction treatment for them.
