Surgery an Option for Men Embarrassed about Man Boobs

Mark Kohout - Sunday, December 29, 2013
There is a solution for men affected by gynaecomastia, more commonly referred to as "man boobs". A common source of embarrassment to men, gynaecomastia is the development of breasts in males. It is caused by a drop in testosterone relative to oestrogen and is found in up to 90% of male babies, but only temporarily. The most common periods to be affected by gynaecomastia are during adolescence and between the ages of 50 and 70 years old. The good news is that it can be treated with surgery, according to news.com.au. The presence of breasts on men can adversely affect their self-esteem, causing distress, so one option is to have the breast tissue removed once the breasts have stopped developing. The procedure costs between $5000 and $7000 and can take up to six months before the full benefits are visible. However, Dr Geoff Lyons of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons said that the results can have a powerful effect on patients' self-esteem and lead to improvements in many parts of their lives as they enjoy their new look.
