Vaginoplasty, or vaginal tightening, is a procedure to improve the feel and tightness of the internal area of the vagina rather than its outward appearance. Vaginoplasty tightens and narrows the vaginal canal and can restore the intensity of sexual sensation and satisfaction.

You might consider vaginoplasty if

  • your vagina has been stretched by childbirth, or
  • the muscles have weakened with age.
  • Sex is less satisfying for you or your partner because your vagina feels “loose” or weak.

Vaginoplasty tightens and narrows the vaginal canal and can restore the intensity of sexual sensation and satisfaction.

What does vaginoplasty involve?

First, you’ll have a consultation with Dr Mark Kohout in his private consultation rooms in Sydney. There you’ll be able to tell him about the symptoms you are experiencing, such as loss of sexual sensation or urological problems.  Dr Kohout is a very experienced surgeon who will be able to put your mind at ease about any of your concerns about surgery, and let you know if vaginoplasty can help you.

The surgery takes around an hour and you will be under anaesthetic/sedation. A section of the vaginal lining is removed, and the muscles repositioned and tightened. Any tissue that may have been stretched or torn during childbirth can also be corrected. The lining of the vagina is stitched with dissolving stitches, and there is absolutely no visible scarring. Results are immediate – your vaginal canal will be narrower and the muscles noticeably tighter.

After surgery you’ll need a sanitary dressing to begin with, but the wound will settle within about ten days. We recommend rest in the first week, although you’ll be walking normally within a day or two. You may have some swelling and bruising and feel some discomfort when urinating in the first week, and we will recommend ways for you to relieve this. You’ll feel back to normal within two weeks, and can have sex after about six weeks. While you won’t need your stitches removed, you will have follow up care appointments to talk about your recovery and results.
