Breast Reduction

BENEFITS OF
BREAST REDUCTION
SURGERY

The Results

Results of breast reduction surgery are typically long-lasting, and patient satisfaction levels are high. Many women who have the procedure later in life say their only regret is that they didn’t do it sooner.

Although you’ll see results immediately after medical breast reduction surgery, bear in mind it can take months for swelling to subside completely and for the surgical scars to diminish. The final result is usually permanent, but the shape and size of the breasts may change through factors such as weight gain or loss and aging.

Although breast reduction is often aimed at resolving medical problems, many women unhappy with their large chests opt for breast reduction as a cosmetic procedure to end issues such as wardrobe concerns and social stigma

Issues like these can be addressed with a surgical procedure to reduce the size of breasts. For instance, back and neck pain will disappear almost overnight, and many women find they are more confident in what they wear. A reduction of even a couple of cup sizes can give a more proportionate look, as well as ease discomfort when exercising.

The Process

Breast reduction surgery is generally performed with general anesthesia. Techniques can vary, but typically entail:

  • Making an incision around the areola (the dark patch around the nipple) and down each breast.
  • Removing excess tissue, fat and skin.
  • Reshaping the breast.

The nipple and areola are generally left in place during the procedure but in cases of very large breasts may need to be removed and then reattached with a skin graft in a higher position.

Our best plastic surgeons for breast reduction in Sydney aim for symmetry between the breasts, but some variation in shape and size could happen, and the size of the areola might be reduced. Incision scars should fade over time but will never disappear.

After Procedure

Immediately after surgery, your breasts will be covered with a dressing and a tube may be used to drain any excess fluid. Your breasts will likely be sore and might be bruised and swollen. Medication can help you manage pain, and antibiotics will lessen the risk of infection.

You’ll need to restrict physical activity for two to four weeks while your breasts heal, and it may be advisable not to wear an underwired bra for a few months. If you didn’t get sutures that dissolve, you’ll need a follow-up appointment to remove your stitches.
